Which people need the most servings from the Food Guide Pyramid?
| The more servings you eat, the more calories
you'll take in. Teenagers, active men, athletes, pregnant and
breast-feeding women need the most servings.
Infants and children need the most calories based on body weight
because they are growing. However, they are small so they need fewer
calories than teens and adults.

| Teenagers, pregnant and breast-feeding women
need more calories to support growth. Active men and athletes need more
calories to provide the energy they need to keep going. |

A common myth is that overweight people need
more calories to maintain their weight than thin ones do. Your body does
not require extra calories to maintain fat.
Some athletes, like football players, may be overweight based on
height/weight tables, but they have more muscle than most people and
therefore need more calories.
|
| Muscle is "metabolically active"
tissue- you need calories to maintain muscle. If you want to lose
weight, try weight training exercises to build muscle and you will burn
more calories. |
