Choose beverages and foods to moderate your intake of sugar

Excess sugar may contribute to obesity and dental caries. Most people are well aware of the large amount of sugar in candy, cakes, cookies and desserts.

Experts recommend that no more than 10% of total daily calories should be from sugar. This means that someone eating 2000 calories a day (the average amount of calories that should be consumed by Americans today) should not eat more than 200 calories in sugar a day.

A good way to lower your sugar intake is to add less sugar to foods (like coffee or tea) drink less soda and sweet beverages. Read food labels to determine how much sugar is in the foods that you eat.
