How much should I weigh?
| There are several different ways to determine an "ideal" body
weight. One of the most frequently used methods is the Metropolitan
Weight Tables. |
An easier method is the "HAMWI"
method.
| For men, 106 lbs + 6 lbs/inch over 5 feet
tall, plus or minus 10% |
for example, if you are 5 feet 8 inches tall, 106 + 48 =
154 lbs; you should weigh 139 - 169 lbs. |
| For women, 100 lbs + 5 lbs/inch over 5 feet
tall, plus or minus 10% |
for example, if you are 5 feet 4 inches tall, 100 + 20 =
120 lbs; you should weigh 108 - 132 lbs. |
Another
way to measure "ideal" weight is your Body Mass Index or BMI
| BMI is determined using the following formula: |
weight
(lb)/height
(in)2 X 705 = BMI
An
example of this is: 141
(lb)/64 (in)2X
705 = 24.3 BMI
| Normal
weights for BMI are between 19 and 25. Therefore this person falls within normal weight limits. However, a more ideal goal for this person would be the halfway
point between 19 and 25, which is 22 for their BMI. Therefore if she or he felt he was overweight or overfat at 24.3
BMI, their goal may be to weigh between 128 and 130. However, if this same person has a lot of lean muscle mass, wears
smaller sizes than others his or her weight and is really fit, they may
be at a healthy weight. Common sense should determine what is best for you. |
